It is adapted from the 16th-century fantasy novel 封神演义°° (Investiture of the Gods) by Ming dynasty author 许仲琳 (Xu Zhonglin). Their image comes from 魔家四将 the Four Demonic Giants°°° in this novel.
To be honest, the novel itself is wonderful, but this movie is completely bullshit from my point of view. I'd rather spend 2 hours watching a JAV than it.
